Pregnancy letters, month by month

The wait is their story too. Before you even meet them there's plenty to tell — and it's the one thing you can't write later.

Why write during the wait

What the home was like, what you dreamed, the grandparents' faces when you told them, the night you chose the name. That only exists now. The day they're born, those letters become the first chapter of their book: "before I met you."

Month by month, what to tell them

• The day you found out. Where you were, what you felt, who you called first.
• The first ultrasound. "Today we saw you for the first time. Four centimeters."
• The week they moved. What that first little kick felt like.
• The night of the name. Why that one and not another, who suggested it.
• Getting their space ready. How the room came out, what you bought first.
• The last letter before meeting them. What you want to say just before they arrive.

And when they're born

You add their name and real date, and nothing is lost: everything written during the wait is already theirs, waiting for them. Their book doesn't start the day they're born — it starts the day you knew they were coming.
